Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe. She was the daughter of Olden Wilson, an ironworker and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the eldest of six children. The father of Nancy was a musician and would play records in the family. This was a major influence on her as a child. She already knew she would be a singer by the time she was four years old and developed her talent by singing in the church choir. In high school the singer was regularly featured in Skyline Melodies. It was at that time that she began to work in night clubs at that at the same time. Nancy was 17 when she had graduated high school, and then matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to sing. Her first record was recorded in 1956 by Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The band performed with her throughout 1956 and 1957. Cannonball Adderley advised her that she needed to relocate to New York to further her career and she went to The Big Town to begin her career in the year 1959. Within a month she got a gig singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her and signed her. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records. That the same year, she debuted her debut single. Guess Who? Capitol Records came out with five Nancy Wilson albums over a time span of 2 years. After Adderley's influences, Nancy Wilson shifted from R&B towards jazz. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to fame and she had her breakout song Tell Me the Truth in 1963.
