Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the first out of six kids. Nancy's father was an avid fan of music and loved to play records in the family. This was a major influence upon her growing up. When she was young she had already developed a strong sense of who she was and what she wanted to do. The church choir was instrumental in developing her talent. In high school her appearances with Skyline Melodies. It was at that time that she began to work in night clubs at that at the same time. Nancy quit Central State University in Ohio after matriculating for an entire year. Her debut album was released in 1956 with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with her from 1956-1958. Nancy's first Dot Records recording was made during her time in the Big Band of Carolyn Club. Cannonball Adderley encouraged that she should move into New York to further her professional career. She moved to The Big Town to begin her career in 1959. After a few weeks the manager of Adderley was impressed by her voice and hired her. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in 1960. She made her debut that year. Guess who I saw this morning. Her records were successful and Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Adderley influenced her to move away from R&B in favor of jazz and torch song. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped make her a star as well as her hit Tell Me the Truth was recorded in 1963. The performance helped her land a gig at the New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
