Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson as the Chillicothe ironworker on 20 February 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy Wilson was youngest child of six. Nancy was heavily influenced in her early years by the music her dad played and loved in the his home. Nancy knew that she was going to be a musician at the age of four years old and developed her talent by singing in the choir at church. In high school, she began to appear frequently on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. In the same year, she started to work at nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she graduated from high-school and matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to become a singer. The first album she recorded was with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. They toured from 1956 to 1958. While in the group Nancy released her first record on Dot Records. Cannonball adderley encouraged her to go into New York in order to increase her fame. She went to The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. After just a few days after, her manager heard her singing and hired her. It was a contract with Capitol Records in 1960. That year, she debuted with the song. Guess who I saw today. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B and to focus on music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 was instrumental to propel her into the spotlight as well as her hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963. The singer was offered a position at the New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's most prestigious club.
