Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winning jazz singer. Nancy Wilson was born on 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe Ohio, to Olden Wilson who was a worker in an ironworks, and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic worker. Nancy was the youngest of six kids. Her father was a fan of music and loved to play records at home. This had a great influence upon her growing up. When she was four, Nancy knew that she would like to become an artist. She began to develop her talent by singing in choirs at church. At the age of 16 the singer began appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. She began working in night clubs around the same age. Following her graduation from high school the 17-year old Nancy was enrolled for a year at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University before leaving and becoming an accomplished performer. In 1956 she released her debut record as part of Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band with which she toured between 1956 between 1956 and 1958. Nancy released her debut recording through Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball adderley advised her to move for a trip to New York in order to increase her fame. She went to The Big Town, New York in 1959. The singer was brought in to perform in The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx which was where her agent had come across her. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in the year 1960. She made her debut that year. Guess who I saw today. Capitol Records came out with five Nancy Wilson albums over a two-year period. Under Adderley, Wilson began concentrating on R&B but soon shifted to jazz and torch music. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley as well as their 1962 partnership helped her reach the top. The singer had her breakout smash Tell Me the Truth by 1963. This performance led her to a spot at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
