Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson, an ironworker from Chillicothe on the 20th of February, 1937. She was the daughter of Lillian Ryan worked as a household servant. Nancy was the youngest of six children. Nancy was influenced by her father's musical tastes as well as the music played at her house. As young as four year old, she knew that she was going to be a star in the singing world. The talent she developed was cultivated due to her participation in the church choir. After high school the singer began appearing frequently on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. That same year, Nancy began working at nightclubs. Nancy graduated high school at the age of 17 and then attended the Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a whole year. She then dropped out to pursue a job as professional musician. She recorded her first record with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956 with whom she was on tour from 1956 until 1958. While in the group Nancy recorded her first album in the studio of Dot Records. Cannonball advised her to move in New York and go to The Big Town to continue her professional career. The agent of Adderley heard about her in The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she signed. Within a month of her arrival to New York, she was in the city. He obtained a contract for the label Capitol records in 1960, and she debuted the following year with the single. Guess who? Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Under the direction of Cannonball Adderley Wilson's leadership, Wilson started focusing on R&B but soon shifted to torch and jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley joined forces in 1962 and helped push her up the charts. The year 1963 was when she scored her greatest success by releasing Tell Me the Truth. This brought her a gig in New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she quickly became a legend.
